Solvent extraction (SX) is an established industrial separation technology in non-ferrous and battery metals refining and recycling, REE separation and purified phosphoric acid production.
Across copper, nickel and cobalt refining, uranium recovery and purification, REE separation and purification, and black mass processing, SX is used because it can deliver highly selective separations at industrial capacity and produce high purity strip for downstream electrowinning or crystallization, depending on the process and product specification (i.e. a REE oxalate or plated cobalt).
In a typical hydrometallurgical flowsheet, after upstream leaching, the pregnant leach solution (PLS) enters the solvent extraction process to selectively transfer one or more target metals into the organic phase. Depending on the chemistry, concentration levels, impurity profile, and project economics, SX may be complemented by precipitation and/or ion exchange, but this technology still remains the key element of the value chain.
For many years, mixer-settlers were the de facto standard for many solvent-extraction duties because of their operating simplicity, established industrial history, and ability to accommodate very high flowrates. Column-based solvent extraction technology has also existed for decades and has been used primarily in the recovery of organic chemicals, but interest in it is increasing in areas such as REE processing, purified phosphoric acid production, waste and side stream valorisation and wastewater scavenging.

The main advantages of extraction columns are compact footprint, low organic holdup, and high stage efficiency in continuous counter-current service. Commonly associated limitations historically were lower tolerance to suspended solids, greater sensitivity to feed variability, and a higher risk of operating problems in systems prone to emulsification or phase entrainment.
Koch Modular offers a broad portfolio of solvent extraction column technologies that address these issues. While having both agitated and non-agitated designs in the lineup, for metals refining and phosphoric acid purification, the most relevant offerings in its portfolio are the SCHEIBEL® and KARR® extraction columns.
The SCHEIBEL column is a high-efficiency agitated extraction column that uses turbine impellers and internal baffling to promote mass transfer, making it well suited to clean services that require many effective counter-current stages. It is therefore a strong fit for applications such as REE separation and purified phosphoric acid production, but it is less suitable for highly fouling duties or feeds with a strong tendency to emulsify.
Where feed conditions are more difficult, the KARR reciprocating plate column is generally the more robust choice. Its reciprocating plate design provides uniform mixing significantly reducing risks of emulsification and enhancing further phase disengagement. This design also offers broad turndown, and is widely recognized as one of the highest-capacity agitated extraction column types. The KARR design can also process systems containing high concentrations of solids, which is relevant to challenging hydrometallurgical duties such as some battery-recycling circuits and other processes prone to crud formation.
From R&D to pilot testing to commercial operations
In addition to the extraction equipment itself, Koch Modular supports integrated process steps such as scrubbing, stripping, and solvent recovery, with saponification included where the chemistry requires it. Both SCHEIBEL and KARR can be used for these extraction steps, and an optimal solvent extraction process takes advantage of both technologies at the appropriate locations within the process. The company also offers pilot testing and rental units, including rental SCHEIBEL and KARR columns, to support process development and scale-up. Koch Modular maintains a 1650 m² pilot plant facility in Houston, Texas which is essentially dedicated to developing solvent extraction processes.
At commercial scale, Koch Modular delivers these systems as modular process units manufactured offsite and shipped for installation, which can improve permitting process, schedule control, quality assurance, and overall project execution. Data from testing using pilot scale SCHEIBEL and KARR columns (in Houston or at a client’s facility) is incorporated to SX modular system designs which are provided with process performance guarantees.
